France is in the grip of the largest wildfire in the past 80 years, with firefighters fiercely battling to contain the flames in the southern region of Aude. The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, August 5, has already destroyed over 16,000 hectares of land, leaving behind at least one dead, three missing, and two seriously injured, one of whom is a firefighter.

The scenes from the area are heartbreaking: thick clouds of smoke cover the sky, while vast expanses of forest vegetation have been reduced to ashes. Footage from the blaze is circulating around the world, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Christophe Magny, one of the heads of the firefighting operation, told BFM TV that the fire remains out of control, though he expressed hope that it could be contained within the day. The fire is burning roughly 100 kilometers from the Spanish border, near the Mediterranean coast, and has spread at an unusually rapid pace.

The damage is enormous: the burned area is one and a half times the size of Paris, while dozens of homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. Authorities have already confirmed that this is the largest wildfire in France since 1949.

Environment Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher told France Info that the fire is now moving more slowly, offering a slight reprieve to ground and aerial firefighting forces.

Scientists are sounding the alarm, emphasizing that warmer and drier summers in the Mediterranean significantly increase the risk of such events. At the same time, France’s meteorological service is warning of a new heatwave starting Friday, expected to affect other parts of the southern region and last for several days.

The situation remains critical, with local authorities urging citizens to stay alert and cooperate, as the battle against the flames continues relentlessly.
