The United Arab Emirates experienced its highest temperature ever recorded for the month of May on Friday, since official records began in 2003. According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), the mercury soared to a scorching 51.6°C (124.9°F).
This extreme temperature was recorded at 1:45 PM in Sweihan. The previous May record—50.4°C—had been set just a day earlier in Abu Dhabi.
Unseasonal heat had already gripped the Emirates in April, when the average maximum temperature reached 42.6°C, prompting authorities to issue heat warnings. Residents were urged to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak daytime hours. On April 27, temperatures climbed to 46.6°C, nearing the all-time April record of 46.9°C set in 2012.
Over the past 30 years, the number of extremely hot days has nearly doubled worldwide. Scientists warn that recurring heatwaves are a clear sign of global warming, and such extreme events are expected to become more frequent, more intense, and longer-lasting in the years to come.
