Alaska, one of the coldest regions in the world, has issued a Heat Advisory for the first time in its history.
On June 15, 2025, in the Fairbanks area—just 190 km south of the Arctic Circle—temperatures exceeded 29°C (84°F), an unusual occurrence for this latitude. While similar temperatures have been recorded in the past, an official heat advisory had never been issued, as is common in warmer parts of the world.
Most homes in Alaska lack air conditioning, or even fans, and are built to retain heat. As a result, residents are vulnerable to sudden temperature spikes, especially during the summer months when the sun barely sets (22 hours of daylight on June 15).
Alaska is warming up to three times faster than the global average, and adapting to a warmer climate is becoming increasingly necessary for its residents.
