The year 2024 was the hottest in India since 1901, the country’s meteorological services announced on Wednesday, 01/01.

The stifling temperatures, according to the authorities, are part of a global trend of extreme weather events driven by the climate crisis.

“2024 was the warmest year ever recorded since 1901,” stated Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, during a press conference.

“The average annual surface air temperature in India in 2024 was 0.65 degrees Celsius above the long-term average for the period 1991–2020,” he added.

India experienced its longest heatwave on record in 2024, with temperatures surpassing 45 degrees Celsius.

A heatwave episode in May in New Delhi resulted in the mercury soaring to record levels in the capital, matching the 49.2 degrees Celsius recorded in 2022.
